Quebec City geospatial industry comes together to make the region a global leader

PÔLE Québec Chaudière-Appalaches took advantage of the Geomatics 2009 symposium, held on October 21 and 22, 2009 in Montreal, to announce the establishment of the Center of Geospatial Excellence (Centre d’excellence en géospatial). The Center will be set up in the Provincial Capital region, where the geomatics industry plays a major role: It has generated revenues in the order of $140 million, created 2,000 direct and indirect jobs and pooled 25 innovative companies.

The Center’s objective? Rally the geospatial industry around structuring projects. It will focus its efforts on business development, ongoing training, the acceleration of innovation and support for financing. Also, a market watch, global marketing and the sharing of labs, equipment and expertise are just some of the means to be exploited to respond to companies’ specialized needs for geomatics, mobility (telecommunications) and decisional computing.

Christian Giroux, chair of the executive committee for the Center of Geospatial Excellence and senior vice-president of DMR, sees in the new business practices to be generated by the various initiatives proposed a unique opportunity for businesses and research centers in Quebec to grow and make a name for themselves. The pooling of efforts will make it possible to effectively compete in the global marketplace.
